Two thirds of the world’s nation states belong to the group of so called ‘developing nations’. Especially the Sub-Sahara region of the African continent continues to draw attention since its development seems to stagnate and it continues facing severe problems such as extreme poverty, environmental degradation, mass migration/urbanization and corruption.
The awareness that ‘something has to be done’ and that this situation is unsustainable has never been more significant. At the same time a fundamental debate on the effectiveness of development cooperation has arisen in recent years in many ‘Western’ countries. Against the background of these discussions the minor offers students the opportunity to shape their ideas and experience development cooperation first hand. Working and studying in Africa, experiencing life in Ghana first hand, learning about other cultures, about development and what our university of applied sciences could do. We offer a well prepared life changing experience in Africa!
The minor aims to provide an introduction to developing nations and Development Cooperation and consists of three basic components. In the
first phase (September) students will be introduced to the topic of developing countries and development cooperation in a series of (guest) lectures, seminars and fieldtrips. In the
second phase (October-December) students will conduct a work placement on a cooperation project in Ghana. In the
third phase (January) students will have the opportunity to reflect on their achievements/learning process and present a portfolio based on their work placement.
