If you are interested in exploring what savings groups can mean for your own working environment, come to our international workshop! Expected audience of the day include financial education and financial inclusion specialists, researchers, organisations working with migrants or refugees, and business development service providers for small entrepreneurs and self-employed.

An international workshop, what is it all about?

On the 19th of June 2018, The Hague University of Applied Sciences (THUAS) hosts an international workshop for participants from all over Europe. This workshop focuses on the potential of savings groups for micro-entrepreneurs and citizens who can benefit from improved skills to manage their finances at household level by having accumulating savings and gaining access to small loans. Organisations from the Netherlands, Spain, Italy and Germany will share their experiences on promoting savings groups in their environment. Invited speakers are from different backgrounds: savings groups’ members, affiliated researchers, financial education specialists, savings groups promoters.

The workshop is organised in cooperation with the Microfinance Centre (MFC), a network of organisations from Europe and Central Asia, and the Cash2Grow Foundation.

Savings Group movement, what do we mean?

Savings Groups are very popular in development countries, especially in Africa, where millions of people participate in Savings Groups. Also, in different countries in Europe, savings groups are becoming increasingly part of the financial landscape. People want to regain control over their own finances; apart from savings groups, other forms of financial initiatives are emerging such as community currencies, crowd funding, peer to peer lending, mutual insurance groups. Recent research results from a study of the Research Group Financial Inclusion and New Entrepreneurship (FINE/THUAS) on savings groups in the Netherlands showed that its members built up financial buffers and had access to loans for business and social purposes.

At the end of the day you will have…

… understood the value of the model of savings groups for the Dutch and European market;

… heard directly from leading European experts and practitioners about the latest research results, good practices and several country experiences of implementing savings group approaches for different target groups, including refugees and migrants;

… have done serious match making to explore with other people and organisations how savings groups can add value to your own work.
